Marketing for Makers

Marketing for Makers

Marketing for Makers

If you've ever sat down to post on social media and immediately thought, "I hate marketing," you're not alone.  In fact, We hear it all the time from makers.

Most people don't start making candles, soaps, pottery, jewelry, art, or handmade goods because they dream of becoming marketers. They start because they love creating. They love the feeling of making something from nothing. They love experimenting and bringing ideas to life with their own two hands.

Then one day, someone buys something they've made and says, "You should sell these.” And suddenly, without warning, they're expected to know photography, social media, advertising, branding, email marketing, and sales.  No wonder so many creatives feel overwhelmed.

The good news is that marketing doesn't have to feel pushy or uncomfortable. In fact, some of the best marketing I've ever seen didn't feel like marketing at all. Over the years, I've met hundreds of makers. Some are incredibly talented but struggle to talk about their work. Others seem to attract customers effortlessly. What I've noticed is that the people who connect most deeply with customers aren't necessarily the ones with the fanciest logos or the biggest social media accounts.

They're the ones who tell their stories.  Think about the last time you bought something handmade. Chances are it wasn't just the item itself that caught your attention. It was the story behind it. Maybe it reminded you of your grandmother. Maybe it was made from reclaimed materials. Maybe the artist shared why they started creating in the first place.  People love knowing the story behind the things they bring into their homes.

One of the easiest things a maker can do is simply share the "why" behind what they create. Why did you make it? What inspired it? What problem were you trying to solve? What part of the process brings you joy? Those stories create connection, and connection is what helps people remember you and your products.

We have also learned that customers are fascinated by the creative process. The things that seem ordinary to you often feel magical to someone else.  You might look at your workbench and see a mess. Your customers see creativity in action.  You might see unfinished projects, scraps of materials, or failed attempts. Your customers see the journey behind the finished piece.

Some of our favorite social media posts from makers aren't polished product photos at all. They're quick snapshots of a work-in-progress, a table covered in supplies, or a video showing how something is made. Those little glimpses behind the scenes make people feel included in the process.

Another thing we have noticed is that people often try to sound like a big company when they're promoting their work. But being a real person is one of your greatest strengths.  People don't buy handmade because they want something mass-produced. They buy handmade because they want the human connection that comes with it. They want to know who's behind the brand.  They want to hear about the late-night crafting session, the project that didn't go as planned, the new idea you're excited about, or the lesson you learned while figuring something out.

Perfection isn't what attracts people. Authenticity is. One of the biggest mistakes we see makers make is waiting until everything is perfect before they start sharing. They're waiting for the perfect logo,  the perfect photo, the perfect website, the perfect social media strategy.  Meanwhile, weeks or months go by, and nobody ever sees their work.  Something we've learned in business?  Done is usually better than perfect.  A photo that gets posted today will always do more for your business than the perfect photo that's still sitting on your phone six months from now. Most importantly, remember that marketing isn't really about selling. It's about helping people discover something they'll genuinely love.

At The Creative Casita, we talk a lot about "community over competition." We've seen firsthand how powerful it is when makers support one another, share each other's successes, and cheer each other on. Building relationships has always been more valuable than chasing followers.

Customers remember kindness, authenticity.and feeling connected.  And here's the part we wish every maker understood, what you create matters. That handmade candle might help someone relax after a long day. That painting might become the centerpiece of someone's home. That baby blanket might be treasured for generations. That handmade gift might become part of a memory someone never forgets. The things you create bring beauty, comfort, joy, and meaning into people's lives. That's not something to feel awkward about sharing, it’s something worth talking about.

So if marketing has ever felt uncomfortable, try looking at it differently. Instead of thinking about selling, think about sharing. Share your story, the process, the passion.  The people who need what you create are out there.  They just need a chance to find you.
